The narrow mindset of success embraced by many Singaporeans has recently been in the spotlight.
While industry and excellence were good, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in a recent forum at the Singapore Management University urged Singaporeans not to be drawn into hyper-competition and endless comparisons. Chasing a narrow definition of success may lead to society becoming more frenetic – and competition more toxic – as we seek to outdo one another.
PM Wong also encouraged youths to find meaning and purpose in what they do and thrive and flourish in their own ways.
What exactly does it mean to think narrowly about success, and what suggests that Singaporeans have this narrow mindset?
How is chasing success different from seeking to thrive or flourish, choosing to find meaning and purpose in what we do?
At this month’s Cultivate Commune, Associate Professor Tan Seow Hon from SMU engages in a conversation with two panellists on this topic. She will share some insights from a research project on flourishing that she is currently doing, and engage our panellists and participants on how we grapple with success and flourishing in our lives, with a view to shaping the current narrative.
